I find myself thirsty for more inspiration and maybe a BodyBugg?
I read every single blog on my sidebar, every single day for inspiration. Because I know that these people are going through what I am going through OR they have already gone through what I am going through and now their blogs sort of act as mentors (of sorts).
Not so long ago there was this stigma that if you weighed over 300 pounds you were well on your way to having to resort to gastric bypass surgery or some other form of weight loss surgery in order to lose weight. It’s a scary thing. As a woman who has had 3 c-sections, I can only say that I imagine these surgeries to be 10 times worse (and c-section recovery is no picnic. Especially after the first few days when you are afraid to cough or poop). A friend of mine who weighed over 600 pounds had gastric bypass surgery. It was a Godsend and saved his life. But even he admitted that a year long recovery and a drastic change to his diet was really extreme and hard.
So i’m on a mission to find other people who have lost half of themselves without surgery. It’s an obsession really. For the first time in a long time, I am seeing things with eyes wide open. I have a picture of *the new me* in my mind (one without dark circles under her eyes. hydrolyze anyone?). This picture is clear as day, I tell ya. And I have come to the point where I don’t care if it takes me 1 year or 10 years to get down to 150, I will do it y’all. I will.
And also… I would like to throw out there that I don’t think there is anything wrong with having weight loss surgery. Everyone makes a choice as to what will work best for them. It’s all related to weight loss and it’s all a journey no matter how you choose to get there. And it is definitely NOT the easy way out. When they take out half of your stomach and re-route your intestines…. it is FAR from the easy way out.
4 weeks of my own journey has brought me to so many wonderful people. Really. I am so lucky to have found so many that I relate to in different ways. And I love that we’re all rooting for each other!
I found a few memoirs that I want to read:
- Half-Assed
- The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl
- My Other Body: A Memoir of Love, Life, Fat and Death
Has anyone read these? If so… what did you think?
Lastly, i’m thinking of getting a BodyBugg. You know, those black things that you attach to your arms as seen on The Biggest Loser? Right. That. I’m not sure though. There is a sale on them right now for $199. But from what I have read, the cost doesn’t stop there. You also have to pay a monthly fee to enter in your stats and upload your caloric burn for the day. So it seems kind of expensive.
What do you guys think? Is it worth it? Is it like a magical piece of equipment or is it just a glorified pedometer? Is there a better/cheaper alternative? Basically, I want to track how many calories I burn in one day.

Ok I’m so glad that I found your blog because I love it!
As far as the Body Bug I do know that JewliaGoulia said Costco is having a sale on them right now that includes a 12 year membership- might want to check out that option.
I love your determination and I’m sure it will take you far!

Kellie I have Half Assed, it’s a great book. Well worth it. I also had thought about getting the Body Bugg but decided to get the ePulse heart rate monitor. It is $99 on Amazon.com and it does pretty much everything the Body Bugg does but only has the one time fee. Granted it doesn’t sync up with the web but that doesn’t matter to me. If you go to my blog and do a search for “epulse” and you’ll see my reviews on it. I love that thing!!!
The gastric bypass thing… I actually considered doing that a few years back but I was about 10 lbs shy of their requirement to do it. Whatever! I was around 270-280. Anyway, a friend of my husbands had it done. He was well over 400 lbs. He looks great now, but he has the sagging skin EVERYWHERE. He’s going to have to have surgery to remove it. Then another girl I know had it and she’s lost 71 lbs since Halloween. She told me that she’s now having problems with her cycle and won’t stop bleeding. I feel bad for both of them but I’m so glad I’m going down the path I am.

I’m considering the BodyBugg as well. Costco has it on sale through the month of January for $179 (I believe) which includes a twelve month subscription. Another product you might want to look at is GoWear Fit.

Another great book is Confessions of a Carb Queen – one of my favorites, and very real and inspiring. You can find it on amazon http://bit.ly/6XLSVW

I have read 2 out of the 3 books. I highly recommend both. They both were very affirming of the feelings and mental part of the weight loss. The only negative for me on both was that they were considerably younger then me so their perspective was a little different. Right now I am reading “Thin is the New Happy” by Valerie Frankel. I am about 1/2 done so I will let you know when I finish.
As for the bodybugg… I am a fan even though mine is the older model and it was a gift. You can get them on eBay for cheaper too. You do have to pay the $6.95 per month to log your food.
There are two other products you might want to check into. One is the GoWear which is made by the same company as the Bodybugg and the other one is called a Fitbit. It is $99 and there is no monthly fee to log your food. The bonus about the Fitbit is it also tracks your sleep.
Sorry to leave such a rambling comment!

I second Becca’s recommendation of Confessions of a Carb Queen – excellent read! I haven’t read Half-Assed yet, but I do read her blog. I loved reading DietGirl, and I plan to reread it again soon – I absolutely love her blogs, too.

Hey
)
We need all the motivation we can get, seriously! I like reading healthy magazines that have stories and hints & tips etc in them. I never throw them away, i just go back through them every so often.
Have you read Ruby’s book? [The one with the show on tele] I’d like to know if thats any good.
Whats so special about the body bug? Can’t you record the stuff yourself and work out what you need to, without paying an ongoing fee?

love your blog, girlie! all that equipment sounds great but i’m sorry, i have no reviews for you. i’ve never bought any of it. i would love a heart rate monitor.
i haven’t read any of the memoirs but i just got a couple books from amazon in the mail yesterday that i’d ordered: born to run, and eat fat lose fat. both about subjects relevant to the journey but not the journey itself.
lots of good book suggestions here, i will have to put them on my ‘to-read’ list!
